The story and experience you want to express in your house will be shaped by these decisions. Dark hard materials tend to evoke a feeling of luxury and stillness, whereas bright warm materials tend to foster a more welcoming and conversational environment. The materials' texture, colour, and sheen will influence the light quality and atmosphere of your home.

Material selection may be summarised as falling into the following five categories: Physical attributes, context, experiential aspects, sustainability, manufacturing, and lastly cost.
